Monsterhearts 2: Skin Legions pt. 1

What was originally going to be a pack of demons and dark things from around the world bloomed into something bigger, but also introduced me to a colorful set of creatures that most people probably haven’t heard of. These creatures inspired skins with themes and play styles I haven’t seen yet, at least not explored as deeply. So, from Judaism and Jewish folklore comes a short sweet cast of monsters I hope you can really sink your teeth into. Here you’ll find Skins for the Mazzikin, Nephilim, Se’irim, and Shedim. 

The Shedim is a creature born from the inability to accept imperfection. While even a god would be satisfied with them as they are, they are too stubborn to quit - and woe be upon whoever tries to stop them. The Se’irim can be interpreted in myriad ways from homeless destructive rebel, to “genius loci” - a guardian spirit or possessive demon of a location. This is a Skin where the setting is in its bones and where it makes its home is as much a character in its scenes as any other. The Mazzikin is violence and chaos at war with the world. It deals with impulse control, hatred, and wanton destruction my Kaiju Skin would be proud of - it can be played as a demon as much as a person grappling with demons of their own making. Finally, there is the Nephilim; the Skin built around the trope of being judged as the “bad seed” for what someone else has done. Like the Nephilim of yore being borne from the sins of lustful angels, this Nephilim must fight the stigma and overcome their own hang ups, but have a few blessings to help them out.
